Jan'alai

jan'alai

Jan’alai the Dragonhawk Avatar and one of the more interesting boss fights of Zul’Aman, this guy hits hard and has over a million health to deal with so be ready for a possibly challenging fight.

Abilities

Flame Breath

A randomly targeted line of fire that shoots out straight towards the targeted raid member, this can hit multiple players so to avoid stacking damage and so on make sure players don’t stand immediately behind one-another or directly nearby.

Dragonhawk Hatchers

Jan’alai will periodically call for a couple of hatchers to come, they each have a small amount of health, somewhere around 6000.  The two will go over to one of the smaller platforms at the side that contains the draonghawk eggs and begin hatching them, releasing the dragonhawks upon the raid.

Each dragonhawk has around 6000 health as well and hits for a small amount on tanks, however they do apply a flame buffet debuff that deals 450 fire damage and increases fire damage taken by 3% every stack.

A total of 20 eggs are on each side, an additional trick is that any eggs left by the time Jan’alai hit’s 35% health will all hatch at once.  The method for dealing with this is allowing the hatchers to break some eggs before killing them, keeping the final released number of dragonhawks at 35% to a minimum.

Teleportation Fire Bomb Special

Throughout the fight Jan’alai will teleport everyone to the center of his platform and start shooting out balls of fiery death throughout the area.  Each bomb will explode after ten seconds dealing around 5000 damage to anyone within five yards.

Basically, as soon as the fire bombs start appearing everyone has to run as fast as possible to get around and through any nearby bombs lest they get exploded, if needed you can use camera angles to provide better views on said bombs.
Another thing, don’t run into the walls of fire, they hurt, alright?

Enrage

At the five-minute mark Jan’alai will enter the enraged state, increasing his damage significantly and requiring much heavier healing to keep the tank out of the burst damage danger range.

Fight

Once your tank has established a comfortable level of threat you can start burning down Jan’alai, he’s a fairly normal tank n’ spank boss fight except for a couple of rather large twists, those would be the dragonhawks and his fire bombs.

Firstly though, let’s get his fire breath attack out of the way, this will randomly target a raid member and fire off a narrow cone that deals fire damage to anyone standing nearby or within the line.  Avoid the line, should you group up too much a lot of people will start getting hit with this so don’t.

Now onto dealing with the eggs, and after that the fire bomb game plan.

The first hatchers should be called a short while after you’ve first engaged Jan’alai.  The hatchers will run up the entry staircase and halt for a second before rushing off to a selected side.  Always designate one hatchers as being primary burn down target, kill it before they even get beyond the stairs if possible, the other one will want to be hurt somewhat but not immediately killed.

The second hatcher should only be finished once you’ve let him hatch around 4 or 5 eggs, this should be enough each appearance to prevent being overwhelmed at 35% when all the remaining eggs are hatched at once.

There are a couple tricks you can implement on this fight, one is using something like a protection paladin to throw down a consecration and utilize various other abilities to easily draw the dragonhawks attention.

Another would be destroying the entire dragonhawk population before dropping the boss to 35%, this is done by either allowing a large amount of eggs to hatch each hatcher spawning run or by simply lowering DPS on the boss so more phases of hatchers go by with 4-5 dragonhawks dyeing each run.

Finally, once you have the dragonhawks spawning all at once it’s easily possible to have a paladin pick them all up and have a round of AoE’ing take them down quite easily, just use one or two mages/warlocks and blow them apart.

Extra warriors or druid tanks are also extremely capable of taking on quite a few of the dragonhawks at a time, so don’t hesitate to simply hold a large amount of them at bay for a while whilst the raid prepares to do whatever necessary to deal with them.

Fire bomb special

This is the second twist of the fight, often rather hilarious to watch should you have either already died or be in a good position yourself.  What happens is that Jan’alai teleports all the players to the center of his platform and starts throwing down exploding fire bombs, your job is to avoid them if at all possible.

Truthfully there should be quite enough room to move out and keep away from the fire, standing within fire yards practically gurantee’s death, and should everyone be on the ball your raid should avoid taking any casualties during this phase except for your first one or two tries at the boss.

Should this be coinciding with any dragonhawk spawns you might run into some threat troubles and so on, just burn down any stray dragonhawks to pull the fight back under full control before returning to the boss.

Overall this guy is quite the tough boss and can induce more than a few troubles for anyone trying him the first couple of times or possibly undergeared raids, so come prepared as much as possible.
